Reading Power Graduations Yield Big Smiles
Graduations were celebrated at all four Reading Power schools in North Chicago in late May. The tutor teams at A.J. Katzenmaier, Greenbay, South and Yeager Schools organized festive celebrations to recognize the achievements of their students. Diplomas were awarded along with bookmarks and parent literature emphasizing the importance of reading to their children.
Amidst balloons and delicious treats, students were individually praised for their unique gifts, in many cases with parents or grandparents present. The N. Chicago librarian was also present distributing materials and reinforcing the importance of family reading time. She encouraged families to sign up for library cards and to use the city’s marvelous resource.
Susan Pierce, Reading Power’s Executive Director, commended students for their excellent reading and writing accomplishments in Reading Power. And the principals from each school complimented their students for their great strides in this important program.
Two highlights concluded these memorable occasions. Tutor and musician Michelle Corse sang a catchy song written especially for Reading Power while students joined in for a raucous chorus.
Finally, each student left with the gift of a special book personally selected by their tutor. Laughter, smiles and happy tears abounded as students and tutors hugged a heartfelt good-bye. |
