Susan Pierce, Executive Director


Susan Pierce began her educational career in the public schools in Glenview, IL, where she first taught the primary grades, continuing as a Reading Specialist, Reading-Language Arts Coordinator, and a Vice Principal. She has been an adjunct faculty member at National-Louis University for sixteen years, teaching in the graduate division of the Reading Department.

She recieved the NLU Adjunct Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award (2000). Mrs. Pierce has been an instructor at the academy of Urban School Leaders training a core group of educators to work in diverse and difficult settings in Chicago. She is a past president and member of the Suburban Council of the International Reading Association.

She is a graduate of  the University of Denver and received a Master of Arts degree in reading from National-Louis University. She is a certified Reading Specialist and has an administrator certification in Educational Leadership. Susan Pierce succeeds Mary Jane Hender as Executive Director of Reading Power, Inc.


 


Mary Jane N. Hender, Ed. D., Co-Founder


Dr. Hender is the co-founder and former Executive Director of Reading Power, Inc. as well as board Vice President.

For five and a half years, Dr. Hender recruited, trained and supervised the volunteers and the professional staff. As a teacher for 20 years, Dr. Hender taught students in kindergarten through the master's degree level including serving as a public school reading specialist coordinating early intervention programs.

Dr. Hender's research focused on struggling readers, specifically those who are bicultural.
 


Reverend Gordon Butcher, D. Min., Co-Founder


Rev. Dr. Butcher, a Presbyterian minister and literacy activist, collaborated with Dr. Hender in launching Reading Power, Inc.

He is a founding member of the Board of Directors and became the President in 2005. For 41 years, Rev. Butcher had many achievements as a pastor of the Presbyterian Church. Some include mission outreach programs as well as initiating a literacy program for Latino immigrants and those coming from the Balkans.
